City 17 RP — Text-Based Half-Life 2 Roleplay
"Welcome. Welcome to City 17. You have chosen, or been chosen, to relocate to one of our finest remaining urban centers."
City 17 RP is a persistent, multiplayer text-based roleplay game built right into the forum. Inspired by Garry's Mod Clockwork HL2RP, it drops you into the world of Half-Life 2 — a city under Combine occupation where citizens scrape by, Civil Protection enforces order, and the Resistance fights in the shadows.
Everything happens in real time. Other players see what you do. Your character, inventory, tokens, and progress all persist between sessions.
► Enter City 17 (or click # city-17-rp in the sidebar under ROLEPLAY)

Getting Started
When you first visit, you'll be asked to create a character. Pick a name and write a short physical description — this is what other players see when they /look at you. Everyone starts as a Citizen at the Train Station with 100 HP, 100 Hunger, and 0 tokens.
You only get one character per account, so choose your name wisely.
Not ready to commit? Guests can spectate the Train Station without logging in.

The World
The game spans 55 rooms across three regions:

  • City 17 — The main hub. Train Station, Plaza, Apartments, Canals, Industrial Sector, Sewers, and more. Includes the Combine Nexus (CP territory) and hidden Resistance safehouses.
  • Ravenholm — A zombie-infested nightmare accessible through a hidden tunnel. Father Grigori's Church is the only safe zone. Dangerous but rewarding.
  • Highway 17 — The coastal road outside the city. Antlions roam the sands, Combine soldiers patrol the bridge. A thumper device keeps the bugs at bay... as long as someone keeps it running.

Use /map at any time to see an ASCII map of discovered areas. Unexplored rooms show as [???] until you find the exits yourself.

Basic Commands
Moving Around
Use the direction buttons below the command input, or type directions directly:
/go north — Move to another room (or just: n, s, e, w, u, d)
/look — See the current room, exits, items, and who's here
/exits — List available exits (also shown in direction bar)
/map — ASCII map of discovered areas
Some exits are hidden — explore thoroughly! Hidden passages, grates, and tunnels connect areas you might not expect.
Talking
/say Hello! — Say something to everyone in the room (shortcut: "Hello!)
/yell HELP! — Shout — heard in adjacent rooms too
/whisper Bob Hi — Private message to someone in your room
/me smiles — Emote — displays as * YourName smiles *
/it rains — Narrate the environment
/ooc — Out-of-character chat (global)
/looc — Local OOC (room only)
/roll — Roll 1-100 (for RP decisions)
Your Character
/stats — View your HP, hunger, faction, level, and playtime
/desc — Update your physical description
/name — Change your character name
/inventory — Check what you're carrying (also in sidebar)
/examine item — Inspect an item's description

Items & Interaction
Items are scattered around the world — scavenged supplies, contraband, lore terminals, and more.
/take crowbar — Pick up an item from the room
/drop medkit — Leave an item on the ground
/give Bob medkit — Give an item to another player (same room)
/use medkit — Use a consumable (food heals hunger, medkits heal HP)
/read terminal — Read a lore terminal (can't be picked up)
Contraband items (crowbar, weapons, resistance gear) are illegal. Civil Protection can /search you — if caught carrying contraband, expect consequences. Contraband also drops when you die.
The ACTIONS panel in the sidebar shows context-sensitive buttons — Take, Read, Attack, Shop, etc. — based on what's in the room. Use these for quick interaction without typing.

Combat
City 17 is dangerous. Hostile NPCs roam the Canals, Sewers, Ravenholm, and Highway 17 — and other players can be a threat too.
/attack zombie — Attack an NPC
/attack Bob — Attack another player (not in safe zones)
/defend — Brace — 50% damage reduction for 30 seconds
/surrender — Give up — if CP is present, you're auto-arrested
/heal Bob — Vortigaunts only — heal another player for 30 HP
Weapons & Damage

  • Fists — 3 damage (always available)
  • Crowbar — 15 damage [CONTRABAND]
  • Stunstick — 10 damage (non-lethal for CP — 30s stun)
  • Shotgun — 12 damage (found in Ravenholm)
  • Sawblade — 10 damage (Ravenholm scavenging)
  • Crossbow — found on Highway 17
  • Pulse Rifle — Combine-issue, Highway 17

Safe Zones: The Plaza and Nexus Lobby — no combat allowed.
Death: When you die, contraband drops in the room. After 30 seconds you respawn at the Train Station with 50 HP and 50 Hunger.
Hunger: Actions drain hunger (moving -1, attacking -2, working -3). At 0 hunger, you take 1 HP damage per action. Eat food to recover.
NPCs: Zombies, headcrabs, fast zombies, poison zombies, zombines, antlions, and Combine soldiers spawn in their respective regions. They fight back — watch your HP. Killing NPCs drops loot and earns EXP.

Economy & Jobs
The currency is Combine-issued tokens.
/balance — Check your token balance (aliases: /bal, /tokens)
/jobs — List available jobs
/job scavenger — Take a job (must be in the right room)
/work — Clock in — earn wages based on playtime
/transfer Bob 50 — Send tokens to another player (same room)
/ledger — View your transaction history

  • Ration Distributor — Work at the Plaza (citizen)
  • CP Stipend — Nexus (Civil Protection only)

Vendors
NPC vendors sell and buy items. Find them in specific rooms.
/shop — Browse what the local vendor sells (aliases: /browse, /store)
/buy medkit — Purchase an item
/sell scrap — Sell an item to the vendor
Vending machines in the Plaza, Train Station, Nexus, and Apartments sell Breen's Water for 5 tokens.

/properties — List available rentals
/rent — Rent the property you're standing in
/lock — Lock your door (others can't enter)
/unlock — Unlock your door
Pay rent on time — 3 missed payments means eviction!

Quests
Bulletin boards in the Plaza, Warehouse, Resistance Safehouse, and Grigori's Church post jobs for anyone willing.

/accept quest — Accept a quest (max 3 active)
/questlog — View your active quests (alias: /journal)
/turnin quest — Turn in a completed quest at the board
/abandon quest — Drop a quest you don't want
Quest types:

Rewards include tokens and sometimes items. Some quests are faction-restricted.

  • Civil Protection — Combine enforcers. Can arrest, search, issue warrants, distribute rations.
  • Resistance — Freedom fighters operating in secret. Access to the Black Market.
  • Vortigaunt — Alien allies. Can /heal others.

CP only: /arrest, /release, /search, /warrant, /ration
All factions: /radio message — broadcasts to all faction members across the map
Factions are assigned by admins. Want to join one? Roleplay your way in!

Leveling & Progression
Earn EXP by playing — killing NPCs, completing quests, working jobs, and exploring new rooms. Your level (1–100) is cosmetic and comes with Half-Life themed titles:

  • Lv.1 — Newcomer
  • Lv.10 — Survivor
  • Lv.25 — Resourceful
  • Lv.50 — Vance Protégé
  • Lv.100The One Free Man

Your EXP bar is displayed in the STATUS panel. Milestone levels (10, 25, 50, 75, 100) are broadcast to the whole server.

Tips for New Players

  1. Explore early. Visit new rooms to earn exploration EXP. Hidden rooms give double.
  2. Eat before you starve. Hunger drains with every action. Grab rations from CP or buy from vending machines.
  3. Don't carry contraband openly. CP can search you. Stash illegal items in a rented apartment.
  4. Check the bulletin board. Quests are easy tokens and EXP, especially early on.
  5. Watch the ACTIONS panel. It shows you what you can do in each room without memorizing commands.
  6. Ravenholm is not for beginners. Gear up and bring medkits before venturing through the tunnel.
  7. Use /map. It updates as you discover new exits and areas.
  8. Stay in character. Use /ooc for out-of-character chat. Everything else is in-world.
